India aimed to have a puppet leader like Ranil or Sajith in Sri Lanka, which is why Adani-backed media support was pushed for Ranil at the last moment. However, this election result reflects the true aspirations of Sri Lanka’s educated middle class. Anura Kumara Dissanayake has clearly stated to both India and China that his priority is the well-being of Sri Lankans, not taking sides in global power struggles. Just because he is left-leaning doesn’t mean he will be a puppet for China like the Rajapaksas. He has emphasized that while Sri Lanka will engage with India’s neighbourhood policy, it will do so while fiercely protecting its own sovereignty.
