Someone introduce her to pacman please. Pacman is where she will find the most reliable and compatible software that definitely won't ever break her system. And there is AUR if she finds pacman not reliable enough!

I would recommend pacman it is very reliable and you should try arch btw.

winget is a solid package manager from Microsoft. It's quickly passing chocolatey in my workflow, i rarely have to go to chocolatey any more

I love scoop installer for Windows. I'm also maintaining some software in scoop. Wish you luck!

There's also scoop on Windows, which does not require a admin window. It's slow to search for packages, so I recommend just searching and >(redirecting to a file), then searching that file. It also exports all of it's packages as a single compressed archive and has a TON of GUI/cli tools. My first pkg mgr was also apt, but I also like arch's pacman/yay in pkg-type specific wsl2 containers.

"I'm not crazy to go with Nix, yet" Damn. I felt called out xD

Nix is just the superior package manager. It's really not that different from others.

NixOS is another beast

Nix works in wsl you could also use scoop on windows instead of chocolatey

Nix mention! For windows I also like scoop. Winget has potential but it's not quite there in some ways.

This is something we are not supposed to say anymore since red hat is evil now but the best package manager is dnf. It's intuitive, it's repos aren't of the antiquity and it resolves conflicts automatically.

It's the 21st Century; and GUIs are the way of the future. Terminal keeps new users OUT of Linux. "Computers for the masses, not the classes!" -- the late Jack Tramiel of Commodore Computer, 1980's.
