How to Get Really Good at Drawing - 3 Top Tips

This is my secret formula for getting better at drawing - my strategy which I consciously used to improve. Believe it or not, I once couldn't draw how I can draw now, i once couldn't draw the things I can draw now, and I didn't get as much satisfaction from my drawing as I do now. If you watch this, you will know it too, and I hope you will get as much drawing improvement as I have.

"Learn how to learn" - the greatest wisdom I ever heard from a teacher. Glad to be a subscriber.

Being able to hear what helped make you grow specifically and going from "I can never do that" to having done a piece many times, is the real highlight for me. It's all about being honest with yourself and earnest in your attempt to be better. I try to keep a mentality of playing an instrument, for a long time you'll just be practicing a single chord, now you can play it, can you play it faster, now it's faster can you play on a beat, now it's on a beat can you play it smoother? Another fantastic video Stephen thank you for the content!

1 Draw what you don't care about. It'll always be good enough.
2 Keep on making the same "mistakes". It's called personal style.
3 Perfection... See 1 & 2.

No trains today? I feel cheated 😆

Great tips, thanks.

I will be attending the Steven Travers Art academy by watching every video on your channel until I have understood each one. I would gladly spend the small fortune to fly from the US to Australia to spend a week learning from you.

Congratulations for the million views, you're doing a great job, hopefully you'll continue to grow. Great video, I've really noticed that I've improved my drawing considerably and I'm starting to take into account some of the details you mention, but your drawings are on a whole different level. I feel like I'm at a much lower level and would need to see some exercises, or simpler drawings to learn from.Thank you very much in advance for the valuable lessons.

I think narrowing down the subject matter is probably one of my biggest problems. But then again, I'm training to be a concept artist and comic artist, so being able to draw a wide range of subject matter to at least a decent degree comes with the territory. At the very least, I tend to focus on a single subject for at least several months before tackling another. But it sure feels overwhelming to think about the many things I still need to train on.

I am off topic but the background scene here is most interesting. Enough diversity and colour yet not distracting. More importantly the entire colour scheme is flawless; the dash of red in the foreground nicely focuses Art Teacher extraordinaire. Great tips as always though I am going at my own snail's pace 😊

Awesome. Thank you so much. This really helps with lots of things. I really can't get my line work in proportion, but my understanding of shadow and color is much much better. Its reassuring to know that even if I focus on a different aspect and its allowed, even.

Love the way you explain drawing, practice practice, I love your teaching way, you can’t fail, I believe to be free .just draw as much as you can, no one can be good at anything unless they enjoy it and learn by your own mistakes. But they are never a bad thing . I now at 62 can draw every time I want it’s therapeutic.👏👋cheers and thank you 🙏.

I don't know if you take requests for content, but your channel has done a lot for me, and the way you teach is perfect. My request is this: How do we learn to replicate/mimic a style that we really, really like and want to get good at? Not to eventually just copy that artist/style, but to incorporate it into our own unique style, to allow those techniques and stylizations to be a part of our work?

I started drawing again and actively learning how to improve because I discovered the mangaka Tsutomu Nihei, author of Blame! and Knights of Sidonia. The strange, contrasting cosmic horror art style of the Blame! manga is something I absolutely want to be able to draw, and no matter how hard I try to learn shading techniques, manga styles, special effect designs, etc. It still feels completely out of reach. Any thoughts on such a niche thing like this?

Hi Stephen. What drawing pens and paper do you recommend? Something accessible in the USA. Thank you!

I disagree with point #2. You don't need to work on all things all the time in order to improve. Nor do I think it is common to lose the ability to see one's errors over time - in fact, most people report that they can see their errors more clearly as they improve. It's too overwhelming to try to fix all the things, especially when you're new. It's okay to just focus on one or two areas of improvement, knowing you'll get to the rest eventually. I also disagree with critiquing every drawing. It's okay to just have fun and make work without worrying about if it's good or if you're improving. It's good to try things that are way out of your skill range just because you really like the subject, and be proud of yourself for the attempt, even if it turns out like crap.
