I would be the head of an HOA just to not enforce any of the rules and let people do what they want with their property

My grandpa is the president of his HOA. He actively tries to sabotage the other idiots when they want to raise fees (they have a 300k surplus) or cheap out on repairs.

HOAs aren't inherently bad, but their absolutely insane level of power is inherently bad.
HOAs liabilities should be dischargable in Bankruptcy, you should have right of redemption until confirmation of foreclosure sale, and thats only if you allow HOAs to foreclose which I would not. Imo they should at worst be able to secure judgment leins against your property.

The small town of about 3000 people I used to live in was entirely a HOA. They were the only ones who would fix the roads and bridges, so they had some value.

He picked the perfect sport for the career he chose. "Hey, opposing council, lets go to the golf course and talk business while we play."

I was the president of my HOA.

The only thing I did was harass people* who didn't pay their dues.

We had a community pool and mowed everyone's grass.

Those guys like to get paid.

*We, the board, also tried to harass a meth dealer out of the community. He burned out his house so there was no longer a second story... I'm sure that was safe and wouldn't have a negative impact on the structural stability of connected townhomes. He was behind on dues as well.

I was also a 4-year letterman at my high school for golf. And captain my senior year!

We have the rules, a covenants. But no HOA to enforce or nag. If we want to enforce things we would have to sue our neighbor.

I'd love to be the head of an HOA just to leave everybody alone. We already have the gates and the speed limit signs and everything, we don't need to put liens on people's houses and fine them millions for their grass being a quarter inch too long and harass them about having a shed in their back yard. It's like most of them can't live without being as stressful as possible.

I think its just that terrible people seek positions of power tbh, but who knows

It depends. Some people get into positions of power on their HOA specifically to limit the HOA’s power to just what’s needed and not forcing people to have ugly, ecologically disastrous properties with manicured lawns and all the personality of a block of styrofoam.

I really wish HOA’S ate outlawed or at-least cannot be involuntary. Because if you want to actually not live in the tyranny of some loser that didn’t get enough attention as a child, especially in these trying times it’s hard to find a house.

There’s like 4 good hoas in the whole country and that’s because they’re basically just the friendly reminder brigade

Unfortunately for Tom, he ignores the data that shows HOA Leaders who were/are actually good people.😂

I mean dude let's be real, let's take a year long break and then come back and expect it all to be the same.

Thing with HoA is it sucks, but if you don’t have HoA you have some trailer trash neighbor with 8 pieces of living room furniture lying in their from yard and a car engine hanging in their tree.

Our HOA was pretty shitty, until my mom joined the board, and she is now about to be the new board president.

While they absolutely can, and do, do shitty things, and behave very cruelly towards the homeowners within, they also aim to keep property values high. Which, if your home is your investment..is NOT a bad thing. As someone else said...they SEEM bad, until someone moves in next door, and starts storing furniture and car parts all over thier front yard, and letting their house fall apart.

Houses in communities aren't an island. They ALL effect each others value. One bad apple ruins the entire bushel. And to claim that if you're "In a position of power in an HOA, then you're a bad person" is narrow minded and wrong.
C'mon Tom, you're better than that.
