ChatGPT Takes my Programming Machine Learning Course

In this video, we put the language model ChatGPT to the test by having it take on a programming course focused on machine learning. While ChatGPT demonstrated its impressive language capabilities by excelling in the written assignments, it struggled to keep up with the programming tasks. We'll take a closer look at ChatGPT's performance, examining its successes and failures, and explore the reasons why it may have struggled with the coding aspect of the course. This video is a must-watch for anyone interested in the capabilities and limitations of language models like ChatGPT. I also example how I will handle students that use ChatGPT in my course.

Have you tried using ChatGPT for less than trivial coding tasks? I am curious what your experience has been?

"Wow" was the first word out of my mouth after watching this. It's inspiring that you're "tightening the noose around ChatGPT" to embrace it's value as a learning aid for your students, having identified it as having an effect like spelling and grammar checkers.

Great video Jeff. I've started to play with ChatGPT to see how well it programs and found something similar: it does well up until a point, and then it's just game over.

I find your analogy to spell check and grammarly interesting. Like you, I see it more of a tool for general humanities knowledge than as a problem solving workhorse for software engineers. It will be interseting how this service plays into productivity in the years to come.

If ChatGPT was a publicly traded company, I would invest in this. ChatGPT could define the next generation of people and not have to use google to search and find an answer and go to websites with ads and cookies collecting data. It seems like Google is now going to be just a library of knowledge and current events, while ChatGPT can communicate well to let the user understand the subject

Love the approach of using modern tools and not shunning them!

Very interesting seeing how it performs in this more centric area of programming. I've had it perform assignments like creating webpages iteratively. It has done pretty well at that. It even does pretty well at emulating graphics if they're in SVG formatting or CSS. Otherwise, an interesting perspective from an AI programming/Professor perspective. I feel from my experiences working with different languages in ChatGPT it performs better with languages that are read as a whole rather than line by line. It has failed in python a few times by mismatching variables due to their place in the sequence. It has also overwritten variables that it has previously written. I believe that might be related to how it tries to focus items; however, it leaves classes that were right above or below the removed function in as if they never existed.

Great work Jeff! I wish more people in academia would understand the technology and re write their assignments to truly test students knowledge and understanding over the ability to use tools! Most professors are not willing to change the way they do things as they have assignments that are 10 years old!

Your visits to Maryville University have inspired my progress towards data science.

I'm using ChatGPT in my Linear Algebra 2 class just to ask questions, not answer questions, and I'm blown away by how useful it is. I haven't taken LA1 in 12 years and I would not be able to do this class with asking ChatGPT what things are. Make sure you watch the 3blue1brown videos on the Essence of Linear Algebra.

I still snicker every time I hear "Worshington". Stay awesome Dr Heaton

I really love the course and have been working on it for a couple of weeks now (no ChatGPT lol). I would like to know what possibility there would be to pass it completely online. I would be very interested in having it in my curriculum as a junior data scientist. In any case, thank you very much for this excellent channel and the instructive classes.

Fascinating vid! To what extent do you feel like its programming score might be improved by inlining the data + fine-tuning instructions?

Maybe it's my imagination but I think you have at least one more video on this topic with a very similar title. But I cannot find it. Please help me.

Just ask for a graph in any assignment. It has no real idea of the visual.

64% is a F?!
That is too harsh.
I expected a D.

Possibly this is the result of fear that students using ChatGPT.

The end result should be a B.
