The early 80's were like a new dawn breaking. You had MTV, BMX, surf culture, new wave, video games, Van Halen updating hard rock, Michael Jackson and Prince updating funk and soul. It was the perfect time to be a kid.

This is such a great song. Truly an anthem.

When they hit the US airwaves, they were the "wild Australian boys" and you can see that here. many big songs, so much talent, and always feels raw and real. Loved them, their songs never get old.

This song, along with Power And The Passion by Midnight Oil, were the only ways a girl could drag her favourite guy, dressed in his flanno and rollers, out onto the dance floor for a dance at many a Blue Light disco.

Michael Hutchence was one of the best frontmen ever, but when it came to INXS, the most charismatic member of the band was Jon Farriss, the drummer. This video is a great example of it.

It's tough to go wrong with INXS. These guys had some of the greatest and most memorable guitar hooks in music and not only was Michael Hutchence a charismatic front man, the guy could sing. I always loved that touch of punk in the guitars in the song mixed with the bittersweet lyrics and that moody synth opening. Great review - you guys are old souls.

INXS were ahead of their time. Last year, I played "Don't Change" for some friends of mine who were not familiar with the song, and they all thought it was a song from the late 1980s or early 1990s. They were shocked when I told them it was from 1983.

In all, INXS had 19 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1983-2005, including 11 Top 40 hits, seven Top 10 hits, and one #1 hit. Here's a list of their Top 40 hits in chronological order:

"The One Thing" (#30 in 1983)
"What You Need" (#5 in 1986)
"Need You Tonight" (#1 in 1988)
"Devil Inside" (#2 in 1988)
"New Sensation" (#3 in 1988)
"Never Tear Us Apart" (#7 in 1988)
"Suicide Blonde" (#9 in 1990)
"Disappear" (#8 in 1991)
"Not Enough Time" (#28 in 1992)
"Elegantly Wasted" (#27 in 1997)
"Pretty Vegas" (#37 in 2005)

Original lead singer Michael Hutchence died in 1997 due to autoerotic asphyxiation, so "Pretty Vegas" was sung by J.D. Fortune, who won a "reality TV" contest show called Rock Star: INXS to become the new lead singer of the band.

I see that you've already heard most of INXS's Top 40 hits already, so I'm going to recommend "The One Thing, " "What You Need, " "Disappear, " "Not Enough Time" and "Elegantly Wasted." Also, since you're now delving into their not-Top 40 hits ("Don't Change" peaked at #80 on the Hot 100 in 1983), I'm going to further recommend "Original Sin" (#58 in 1984), "Listen Like Thieves" (#54 in 1986) and "Bitter Tears" (#46 in 1991). "Pretty Vegas" is also worth a listen, because J.D. Fortune sounds similar to Michael Hutchence without trying too hard.

Another of the great bands out of Australia. This one was early 80's...the heart of the New Wave era. While my music obsession began in the late 60's, listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, and the like....I did have this album as well. I listened to many types of music: disco, R&B, Soul, Punk, Folk, Country...and the rest.

Another great song from the same album-Shabooh Shoobah is ”To Look at you”. Good exemple for this new wave music that took off in the early 80s. Then INXS became a big arena band a couple of years later with many hits on the charts.

My fave INXS song! ♥ Like the kinda dark lyrics

Michael's got that Mick Jagger swagger goin' on. There's something about these punky '80's guitar riffs that have a sort of Carillon vibe. Distant, echoing, eerie, mysterious.
That odd dancing was so familiar in the '80's! 😆✨🎶

This song, "Original Sin", "Dancing On the Jetty", .. So many good INXS songs.
They kind of make me sad though - whenever I hear INXS I also think of the movie "A Knight's Tale" and Heath Ledger.

From the 1982 LP, "Shaboo Shabah", which put INXS on the map. "Don't Change" was the follow up single to their Billboard U.S. Top 20 hit "The One Thing", which garnered heavy rotation on MTV.
