One of my grandmothers was from a German family in Michigan (her dad was an immigrant, her mom was American but born to German immigrants). The churches founded by the 19th century Germans still stand in the old German neighborhood. There's one on almost every corner, and I remember when they were all full for multiple services every Sunday. Originally the preaching was all in German, until WWI, when they switched to English. Near the 100th anniversary of the church my grandmother's family helped to found, the choir director gave homage to the founders by having the choir sing Stille Nacht in German. There are still a few of us descendants attending that church, so it was an honor that she did that. May she rest in peace.

I first heard the song Silent Night in the Disney Singalong Songs video Very Merry Christmas Songs when I was 5, it was one of the first two songs about the nativity scene I heard.

many years ago during christmas eve mass, after father had given his homily, he stood standing quietly and then began to sing, unaccompanied Silent Night. no instruments no others singi ng, at first. and then a few people joined in and then more and more and soon the entire church was singing it together, hundreds upon hundreds of people. I believe it was impromptu, it didn't feel like it was planned or rehearsed. it was so beautiful, so perfect and so sweet I will never forget it. Im so glad to be A Roman Catholic Christian. I wouldnt be anything other for all the money in the world - I wish a belated but heartfelt Merry Christmas to all my brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ all around the world !
