“The caffeine of Europe,” as he liked to call himself, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was the godfather of Futurism, Italy's most coherent artistic movement of the 20th century. In this video, you'll learn why Futurism attacked traditions, promoted "the beautiful ideas which kill" and claimed that beauty exists only in struggle.

This was an ideology, started in Italy, that categorically rejected _pasta._ No wonder I haven't heard of it til now.

The influence of futurism is grossly underestimated, in music, art, design, architecture and our modern metropolis style of thinking. Without futurism there would be no superman or any marvel comic characters.

It's interesting how Italian futurism, Marinetti in particular, influenced the rise of Italian fascism. Another futurist movement was based in Russia mostly comprised of poets who were sticking to the revolutionary communist ideals, but they drew inspiration from Italy where the futurist manifesto became a part of an ideological basis for the claimed anti-communist ideology. Also yes it's weird how you would draw connection between fascism and conservatism since it seems obvious but Marinetti, a futurist denying traditionalist and bourgeois ideas, was in fact the first affiliate of the fascist party. And then, knowing the connection between such radically progressive and therefore"lefty" looking art and ideology movement as futurism and such a radical political landmark as fascism you can see how broken our mass perception of fascism and fascistic regimes in post-WW1 Europe is. All is seen through a different lense when you find out Mussolini used to be a communist and Marinetti helped him write the manifesto

Europe was in an interesting state at the time, empires fell and the path to create nations on those ruins and reorient politics towards the regular working folk was established. And the esthetical and ideological shift in art represents this confusing broken up state of that time very well

Such a shame Boccioni died so young. Would have been fascinating to see where he might have taken Futurism with his painting and sculpture. Great video!

I just returned from Milan. While the crowds were busy taking selfies in the Piazza, and swarming in and out of the Duomo, I visited the Novecento, mere steps away. The excellent exhibits introduced me to Italian Futurism. Now I am on a mission to flesh out the skeletal learning I acquired while there. Videos like this will help me on my quest to know more. Thank you!

I find it funny how futurism was born of someone almost murdering 2 people and deciding that it's their fault instead of him driving too fast

Fascinating. Thank you.

Recently I saw some criticisms about pronunciation matters. You can Google names and other words, writing how do I pronounce... Or just the word you want to hear and the word pronunciation or pronounce. Google will produce audio or video examples. It's a very helpful aspect of Google.
