Reason 1:
We humans love rituals.
Seriously, research shows that people love routines.
Put simply: People crave structure and security, and ritualistic behaviour and beliefs fit right into that.
Are you going to make an important test? Ofcourse you will wear the same shirt you’re wearing every time you want to get some great results.
The more special we think an event is, the more likely we are to enjoy rituals associated with the event being satisfying. In a sense, that gives us something to look forward to, in addition to the event or holyday we’re alreay excited about.
Reason 2 for being superstitious is to have a feeling of being in control.
Imagine you have a job interview and heavy rainfall makes the near future look grim? Well sure, you can’t control the weather but you wouldn’t open your umbrella inside and jinx yourself even more right?
When life gets stressful, it can be very satisfying and comforting to have a routine to give us a sense of control, even if it’s effect on the future is futile or even non-existant.
Reason 3 for being superstitious is laziness.
This happens to a lot of people who have dreams and goals in life, but generally wait for the Universe to grant them these dreams and goals. When looking back later in their life, instead of feeling regret or remorse, they seem to blame the Universe for them not being lucky enough to become successful.
Instead of taking responsibility for their actions, or their lack of actions, they come up with a made up excuse as to why they didn’t achieve what they had in mind.
Of course, it can never be too late to move that ass and complete some goals you set out to do.
At its basic foundation, a superstition is nothing but a false belief, so it works just like any other belief. Once a superstition gets planted into someone’s mind, he or she collects proof to uphold this belief. Unless he or she questions their superstitions, they may carry them in their minds all their life.
