Bushcrafting Primitive Survival Fishing Hooks (That Actually Catch Fish!) | Catch & Cook

Greg found success with his dogbane line, so he decides to handcraft primitive survival hooks out of wood, bone, and a NEW idea. He takes his bushcraft tackle to the lakes for a test and manages to land trout for a Catch and Cook!

Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

Love it when he actually teaches us the old pioneer way of doing things . Everyone else is modern tech and blah.

I am a 62 yo grandmother in Tennessee. You inspire me! Wish I could come fish with you. I’m teaching my grandson all I can. We love camping, Bushcraft, fishing, and cooking over a fire!

Please do a series of edible plants in the Rocky mountains. This info can be found in books but identifying in reality is entirely different. Don't let that knowledge go to waste!

There are three YouTubers that I look forward to watching every week. The downside of anticipation is when the videos start, they never seem to be long enough! How about an hour video now and then?

I think it's Greg's voice that adds such a rich dimension to these videos. Like a lot of truly tough men, he has a gentle, unhurried way of talking. I hope that when he does his book, he does the audio version himself.

You remind me so much of dad and I will never forget all the lessons he taught. I watch all of your videos with anticipation. Thank you. I survived for three months alone on little river as of my choice because I was homeless. People need to learn the old ways like my father taught me. So yet again THANK YOU!

14:25 to 14:27 the transition of "think" is really good, they're putting a lot of effort on every details making this video. Much appreciated ❤

Hey Greg, the toggle style hooks work well. I used to catch Bluegill with them as a kid. Unlike all of the other designs, they can't get unhooked because they wedge in the mouth. Just keep the pressure on and pull them straight in quickly. Using the right bait as part of the design is important, like a nightcrawler that slides up and keeps the line straight and the tip sticking out. You can even feed a small strong bone toggle hook through a nightcrawler to the tail area so its like a worm with a barbed tail and your worm stays on the string to save bait. The best part is the simple skinny easy to swallow profile, and it doesn't even need to be very sharp to get wedged in. Also unlike J hooks that have to be set in, there is no way for the fish to unhook it. Definitely worth mastering the toggle hook especially since you can get very small fish with it to use for fish or trap bait. Thank you for the videos and keep them coming. All the best!

You're so cool as ever! Sorry because I'm late watching this, I watched this 2 hours ago after you posted because it is still 3:00 A.M. in the midnight here in my country and I'm sleeping 🤣 hope you understand Greg ❤.

Another great episode! The traditional ways are so much harder and time consuming than the modern ways, it gives me a great appreciation for our ancestors and how difficult subsistence living is. Keep up the great videos, I'm working overseas so seeing the Northland (I'm from Alaska) does my soul good.
