What a beautiful poem on the transience of life. To ponder one’s own death is truly human. It’s what separates us from animals.

The best part of poetry is it's narration and if you mastered the art of narration you can rock it at any stage.

Amazingly sad poem. John Keats' parents both died before he turned 16, and John only lived to be 25 as he died of the same disease his mother died from, tuberculosis. Death was one of the main things he wrote about, as well as romance, this poem of course being about dying early before feeling complete with life. As he very well may have.

That he died just at 25 makes me sad..

This has always been my favourite sonnet, a man who achieved so much before dying at 21, only regrets all the great books he has not read before his untimely death! What humility!

Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.

He holds you in his cold embrace
The mask of death upon his face
His empty eyes still watching you
Await the day you see him too.

At this present time I am weaving together the plot for my first novel. In one scene, an elderly man whose mind begins to leave him is standing on a shore contemplating a dream which he realises now has slipped from his grasp.

I was looking for some inspiration from RedFrost while writing, and then came across this extraordinary poem so started to listen to this recitation.

"Then on the shore of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Til love and fame, to nothingness do sink."

Extraordinary moment. Thank you, RedFrost.

Shout out to A J Stafford - the most inspirational English teacher I ever had in 1981-83 - taught me to love the romantic poets. Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, Marlow, Bucks, coincidentally next door to Percy Bysshe Shelley’s home.

We are humans. It's OK to have fears.

I Just felt myself standing alone at the edge of the world, staring up in the face of starry night. For a moment I was Keats, preparing to leave this world.
