Dave and the meatball and Jay Thomas and the Lone Ranger story were part of my own Christmas tradition because my mom worked nights as an RN at the VA. So Dave’s tradition was my tradition. I was sad when he left and really bummed when Jay Thomas died

This was always one of my favorite segments on The Late Show. Dave's Mom was always willing to play along with whatever Dave said or asked her. I especially liked it when she would open her refrigerator and reveal that it was full of beer for all the "drifters" that she was expecting.
