That's the definition we are given. "Substance" and "evidence" are both material and tangible things. "Hoped for" and "not seen" both allude to the temporal axis we occupy -- the future.

Like Christ says, "Faith as a mustard seed" which is that with *time* a new physical reality results: the mustard tree. You don't see the tree looking at the seed, but it is there.
