FreeNAS vs Proxmox | Open Source Showdown

Someone on reddit said it better than I could after making this, basically FreeNAS is a storage solution with a hypervisor bolted on, and Proxmox is a hypervisor with storage (zfs) glued to it

hypervisor comparison
FreeNAS lfcdxsz both are pretty cool.
ProxMox is more configurable, and can do pretty much everything that FreeNAS can do but with more options, and more required configuration.

Both have support for "one-click-install instances" in the form of containers or jails, however freeNAS calls it apps. Both have bigass storage pools (ZFS) and virtual machines. FreeNAS has support for Samba share directly in the UI. In ProxMox you gotta set that shit up. If you don't wanna learn samba configuration, FreeNAS is the OS for you :)

An unusual comparison to be frank. ProxMox is designed to be a bare metal hypervisor where FrweNAS was always designed as network attached storage as its primary use.
I know ProxMox can be used to share files, but it's not really designed for that purpose.
An interesting comparison though.

I expected a different kind of comparison.. There's almost no mention of Proxmox's pros like pci-e passthrough to VMs. Also there are no mention about the NAS capabilities ( especially ZFS ) of both OS.. This comparison is too shallow I think.

I’m loving your channel. Mind doing a video on containers while comparing LXC to Docker?

never thought of using freenas as a hypervisor. Always thought it was an OS. Thanks for the info.
