I first saw Hawkwind in September 1970 at The Mountford Hall at Liverpool University. I remain a committed fan 54 years on.
I thank you, Barry.

I discovered Hawkwind at 11 years old, 1973, when I borrowed a friend's Space Ritual album. Headphones on, and I was tripping without drugs, really it took me into space. I was hooked, and my ears started focusing on the bass...Lemmy!
Glad to hear others appreciate old Hawkwind!

Wow … i didnt think I’d ever see Hawkwind reviewed here. I was exposed to this group whiist visiting friends who indulged in smoking weed in the early 70’s (not a smoker myself). I went on to be a deep fan subsequently purchasing many Hawkwind Albums still proudly sitting in my vinyl collections. Some unbelievable music/albums at the pinnacle of their careers. Naturally i went on to buy the CDs as time progressed. I’m starting to feel nostalgic now. Fantastic album artwork too … brilliant.

Been waiting for this for YEARS! Thought you mightn’t be a fan. This band have become almost a permanent listen over the last few years for me.

My favorite is the double-live "Space Ritual", but fortunately I have the first three and the seventh of your ranking, and all in original vinyls of course, with fold-out cover for "In search of Space" and "Space Ritual"! Thanks.

Hawklords 25 Years On is a monumental album that often gets overlooked. Being a fan of a lot of the 80s stuff I would have to include Church of Hawkwind and Choose Your Masques also.

3:28 Needlegun isn't an anti-heroin song, or "separate from the conceptual arc of the album." The "needlegun" is the weapon used by another Moorcock character, Jerry Cornelius, and - as Moorcock nerds will know - all of those characters (Elric, Hawkmoon, Corum, Jerry Cornelius, etc.) are aspects of the same multiverse-tastic "Eternal Champion" character - each of whom has a weapon that's an aspect of the Black Sword. It's described as taking a different form for each of them. So the "needlegun" _is_ the Black Sword. iirc, it fires little syringes that suck up a person's "life-essence" same as Stormbringer devours souls.

So, it's very much on-point, conceptually, with an album about the Black Sword.

Got to add Hawklords. I know it doesn't say Hawkwind on it but it is Hawkwind. Great album.

Awesome review! Puts a lot of things in context. However, Warrior on the Edge of Time and Hall of the Mountain Grill are at the top of my list, not least because of the things which happened when that music was playing. Nuff said. "There's a bishop in the bathroom mirror!" A shout-out for Space Ritual.

Hawklords, Quark Strangeness and Charm and PXR5 would be my top 3 with an honourable mention to Chronicles of the Black Sword

Perfect.... perhaps PXR5 should be the 11th album on this list (High Rise is a magnificent song)

What excellent episode, I am a massive Hawkwind fan and the album choices I can’t argue with and the viewing of this episode left me feeling like I had a Valium 10, Nice.

Thank you for this review and count down..I cite this band as a major influence on me and my comrades in Acrylic Prism .A band that's infighting was quite familiar in our forty year history .Rest in peace .

Glad you picked Astounding Sounds - most Hawkfans I know don't like it. That and Quark Strangeness And Charm are my two favourites.

A shout for Electric Tepee, It Is The Business Of The Future To Be Dangerous and Alien 4. A fine trilogy of albums from the early to mid 90s.

Another great video... But, Lemmy wasn't on In Search of Space... You must e referring to the CD release which has Silver Machine on it.. Bass player on this album was David Anderson

A very welcome video is this, much obliged sir. Saw Hawkwind 2 nights ago in Nottingham and it was an undeniably fantastic gig, Dave Brock clearly enjoying himself and in very fine form indeed at odds with his vintage, amazing actually. The band itself in its current line up are just sublime, perfectly complimenting each other and offering all the tropes one would expect from classic sounding Hawkwind, do catch them live at this point whilst there is still time, you will not be disappointed whatsoever 👍 Honourable other album mentions you perhaps overlooked? Palace Springs: A fine album from one of the classic line ups, Simon House on violin blending beautifully with Harvey Bainbridge's lush and dreamy synths, contains some outstanding reworks of classic tracks and a few new cuts, notably Treadmill which has to be one of the greatest pieces of work ever by the band, all in all a highly recommended album indeed. PXR5: Whilst it may be a somewhat thrown together affair, there is no denying the quality on offer, with lashings of punk energy and outstanding songs this is a somewhat forgotten gem. I could go on but then again I am possibly preaching to the converted, so I'll leave it there. Thank you for your work as always, it is appreciated. And you get a gold star for the term "whooshiness" 😁
