I love this book so much, for its pretension as much as its beautiful prose. I love how Papen is both narrator and the reader, that he's defined by the people he surrounds himself with. I don't think I'll ever stop loving this book. Definitely a favourite.

I read it 30 years ago in college with a bunch of friends. One of the most addicting novels I've ever read. We all wished our lives mirrored those of the characters (without the effort of bothering with Greek). But I remember feeling it kind of came apart at the end. Don't totally remember why. Maybe I was expecting some kind of twist that never came.

I have read a lot of books in my life (am 46) and recently read The Secret History and loved it. Left me a little sad but couldn´t get the charcters out of my mine for a long time. Recommend it for sure. Good video.

I read this book over the summer and absolutely loved it! I have to admit that it did seem pretty pretentious, in both tone and content, but in a way that only added to the sense I got of Papen's character. I've since read The Goldfinch and while it's obvious Tartt's style has matured, I think this'll always be my favourite.

My all time favorite book! I read it over 20 years ago. A friend needed to pick a book for her book club and I suggested The Secret History. She liked it, but she said everyone in her book club hated it. Say What???
