I spent 9yrs in Germany as a soldier and loved every moment, I was stationed in Monchengladbach so krefield, Gutersloh, Bielafeld, koln, duselldorf etc I know very well.
As a black soldier the hospitality shown to me was amazing, It was not unusual for the localsto visit and chat with me when we were having manoeuvres and camped out in the forest ( asking for me by name especially when I told them I was Jamaican 😂😂) you really need to write your memoirs.

Assuming your helper washed clothes by hand. Da time I lived in JA for 5 months with my three oldest ( they were 4, 5 & 8j I use to wash their clothes by hand. It wasn’t so bad. I’d sit outside and was comfortable and actually enjoyed it. But washing my clothes wasn’t so nice. And jeans forget it though I never wore jeans in JA. But having to wash for lots of people and for people larger then kids too much.
