Just to explain to foreign public, Stromae was doing this performance on live tv in the national news. It never happens that an artist release something in such a direct way, especially since it was a long time ago that he appeared publicly.
Imagine the average french viewer at home watching tv and hearing about covid news and press people, and then that happens

This is unusual. I’ve never seen anyone perform a song while sitting down with an interviewer like they’re still in an interview. No stage, no back up singers or dancers, nothing added. I think it kinda adds to the meaning of the song, people having these suicidal thoughts at any moment and people around wouldn’t know. Plus the way he just goes back to talking to the interviewer, crazy.

J'aime beaucoup la sincérité dans le regard de Stromae. On a le sentiment que c'est une chanson honnête qui sort de l'intérieur, comme une confession intime.

He had litterally disappeared from the media and never wanted to sing again for years. Everybody wanted to know about his well being. The lyrics give answers about what he went through. He wanted to avoid discussing it unprompted as it is such a sensitive topic. Instead he wrote a song and offered it to us the public to give us all the answers we needed.
Remember though. He is Belgian. And it speaks a lot about his approach to the media which is more spontaneous and less codified than in France. Definitely a big electroshock in France when this happened.

This performance was so beautiful. Stromae staring at the camera the entire time while expressing himself was so intimate and genuine. I've always loved the way he chooses to perform and express his music, truly encompassing the meaning of the song. It was perfect for the interviewer at the end to say 'Thank you for your sincerity' because this wasn't simply a performance of his song, but also Stromae revealing his emotions. And it was beautiful.

J'étais devant le JT avec mon vieux père ce soir la, et même si je sais qu'il a pu souffrir de voir ma dépression s'installer, c'est un tabou dont on ne parle pas. On était côté à côté, silencieux, et il avait du mal à retenir ses larmes.
