Harvesting and Storing Gladioli Corms

Gladioli plants produce small, new corms attached to the main corm. To harvest them without damaging the plant, avoid pulling it directly from the ground. Instead, use a garden fork to gently lift the entire root structure. Insert the fork a few inches away from the base of the plant and lever it downwards.

Once lifted, carefully examine the plant for any small cormlets that may have fallen off. Place the entire plant on a clean surface to prevent losing any parts.

Remember, the top, newer corm is the one you'll want to keep for planting the following year. The older corm, which the new one grew from, can be discarded.

To prepare the corms for storage:

Cut the Stem: Trim the main stem to about 2.5-3 inches above the base corm.
Dry the Corms: Place the cut stems upside down in a container to allow excess moisture to drain. This will also help dry out any remaining soil.
Storage Location: Store the container in a dry, warm location, such as a shed or garage.
Preparing Corms for Winter Storage:

Remove Cormlets: Carefully remove any small cormlets from the base of the main corm. These can be saved for future planting.
Separate Old Corm: Gently separate the old corm and its roots from the new corm and stem. Discard the old corm and roots.
Clean the Corm: Brush off any remaining soil from the new corm and stem.
Prepare the Storage Container: Fill a container with fresh newspaper to absorb moisture and provide insulation.
Place the Corm: Cut the stem to about 1 inch above the corm and place the corm upside down in the container.
Seal the Container: Secure the lid on the container, but make sure to add some ventilation holes.
Store the corms in this way until you're ready to plant them again in March or April.
