Week Ahead Weather Forecast: 24th August To 1st September 2024

The topsy, turvy summer of 2024 will be ending on another surprising note as high pressure starts to make it's presence felt from the south and the weather becomes both warmer and drier as we approach the start of meteorological autumn 2024.

Saturday morning has been very wet across much of southern and southeastern England with outbreaks of heavy and persistent rain. Meanwhile further north and west we've had a lot of showers but also some sunny spells.

This afternoon will see the persistent rain moving away from East Anglia and south east England but more heavy, possibly thundery downpours are likely through central and eastern England this afternoon. South west England, Wales and northern England will have a drier afternoon while Scotland and Northern Ireland will have more showers. Temperatures will be range from 13C to 20C so quite a cool day.

Overnight, most central and eastern regions will become dry but the west will have more showers and they could merge into longer spells of rain through Northern Ireland and western Scotland later. It will be quite a cool night at 5C to 11C.

Another weather system will be pushing eastwards across the northern half of the country tomorrow. 

Cloud and outbreaks of quite heavy rain will push eastwards through Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales. Areas further south and east should have a lot of dry weather but a few showers are likely for the Midlands and south west England. The best of the sunny spells will be in the south east corner. Another cool day with temperatures of 12C to 20C.

Bank Holiday Monday is looking mostly dry as high pressure starts to build northwards. Much of England and Wales should stay dry with sunny spells but Scotland and Northern Ireland will have scattered showers. A warmer day with temperatures of 15C to 23C.

Tuesday will bring a north/south split to the country. Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England will have outbreaks of rain while the rest of England and Wales have sunny spells and mainly dry weather. Temperatures will be very warm in the south and east but cooler further north with a range from 16C to 26C.

High pressure strengthens to the east on Wednesday. Some light showers are still possible for western parts of England, Wales and Scotland as well as Northern Ireland but most places should stay dry with sunny spells. It will be very warm or locally hot in the south east corner with temperatures of 25C to 28C but the north and west will be cooler and fresher at 16C to 21C.

A bit of uncertainty about the weather for the end of the week but Thursday and Friday probably keep some showers going in the west and north west but most places stay dry with sunny spells. Temperatures remain quite warm at 15C to 25C.

High pressure should continue into next weekend bringing more dry, sunny and warm or very warm weather to most places.

Summary: Starting cool and unsettled but turning drier and warmer later.

When I was a boy growing up in the mid 70's we used to get really bad thunderstorms at night in the summer but over recent years & where I live now (Bristol) they just dont seem to occur anymore. Really dissapointing not to get thunderstorms like summers of old

I think this will be our last burst of summer heat. Autumn is not far away.

Thanks for the update Gav, looking forward to some heat next week. Utterly miserable day here in South London today with heavy rain and a way below par maximum temperature of 17C, though thankfully has now stopped raining as I head out for a run.
