I also rely on Lindsay's reviews before buying anything. I even asked her about something in particular, when she hadn’t made a video about it, because she is so knowledgeable and honest, and I trust her completely. And she always answers me back!

I work with a lady who says shopping for art supplies and using art supplies are two different hobbies

Really insightful conversation around consumerism. This year I set a resolution to create more and consume/buy less - my channel definitely took a hit but I feel like the videos are more meaningful ❤

Wow! This was a great podcast! I want to thank both of you for highlighting the fact that many of us are over-consuming. I find it unfortunate that the social media platforms put emphasis on videos that further encourage spending rather than doing. Dollars to donuts that so very much of what we are snapping up will end up in landfills at some point rather than being used. I love real instructional videos that show how to actually use products but they don’t get recommended which creates a vicious cycle for creators because they need views so they have to create ‘what sells’. For me, I took a hard look at myself maybe 6 or 8 months ago and decided that not one single thing I’ve purchased has made me a better watercolorist. Mainly because I’m not using them, I’m busy shopping. So I stopped buying. I will buy a tube of a legacy brand of paint if I have nothing comparable but that’s it. Thanks ladies for discussing this subject. Someone has to say ‘enough!’. Manufacturers are using us!

My favorite supply videos are the “my favorite” or “what I’ve been using lately”. I do like to see what other artists use and how/why they’re using them, rather than hauls for the sake of collecting. As others have said, thanks for reminding us it’s ok to say, “enough”. I feel like the Irodori gouache sets are an example of ridiculous pricing, in my opinion.

Wonderful to see you both on the same screen. It seems like lately many YouTube artists have realized that YouTube is pulling them away from creating art. It's so time consuming to make and edit just one video that there isn't much time left to just art around. I've also decided to slow down on the buying supplies and also making regular videos, and use that time to finally paint what I've been wanting to paint for ages. Miranda, I can't wait to see what comes of your experiment. I hope you'll share those large canvases when they're full of colors. Have fun.

Actually I love that dopamine hit when I use up a an art supply like a pencil or a paper pad. It gives me a sense of achievement. 😊
Also I would really like to see videos that show what others were able to use up.

I might be in the minority, but I don't like haul videos. They make me uncomfortable. I much prefer a video that introduces a product (not necessarily a new one), explains its qualities (and may mention similar products with those qualities), and demonstrates how to use it. The presenters who encourage people to use what they have when showing techniques stay in my subscription list. Those who show products from Temu and the like are history to me.

I have never enjoyed haul videos, though I know so many others do. I find this whole NO-BUY idea very refreshing. For me I have been caught up in the have to have syndrome without looking at what I already have. Like so many I have years worth of supplies that I will never get to in this lifetime. I am inspired to use up my art and craft supplies. Thanks for bring this discussion to the forefront.

Thanks for this. I have bought way more art supplies than I need mostly because of watching videos. I appreciate that the videos have helped me get some good stuff, but I definitely bought more than I needed because of seeing all the things that I thought I needed to try and then discovered that they were pretty much the same as what I already had. I’ve also ventured into too many different media rather than focusing on one and getting good at it. I’m now on a permanent no-buy except to replace what I ran out of, which will never happen if I don’t stop watching videos and start painting. I won’t let myself watch review videos of things I don’t have. I’d much rather see a new tutorial in my feed. I need to go use my paper before the sizing goes bad (which it has started to do). I enjoyed this podcast. Now I’m going to go paint something.

In the old days of Frugal Crafter, Lindsay, you used to tell us how to use supplies like glycerin and alcohol rather than more expensive items that were becoming popular. This is a great guest. I’d love to see you run another series like that.

I love the no buy philosophy:
You could always use the items you just love and donate any extras to women and children’s shelters. I had to love and did that with 1/2 of my supplies.

Stuff that was sitting in my drawers was really appreciated by those that needed it.

This subject is very relevant to me. I have more art supplies than I feel like I can use up in my life time, especially since my hands are in pain on and off with no end in sight. But also, I have the fear of missing out. But yes, as Miranda said, I rely on you and other trusted reviewers to help me pick and choose what I add to my dragon’s hoard.

2 of my favs chatting. It’s so soothing to listen to both of you, and your respective channels. I love how down to earth you two are in spite of having an YT channel. It’s doesn’t smack of consumerism 🙏🏽❤️

Miranda I just want to thank you again for your very kind gift. I really do like them and the colors that you selected are beautiful. Now I just need a potters pink for puppy noses lol 😆

Someone needs to start an on-line Art-supply addict's support group where those of us who have sworn to do a no-buy can be held accountable. When we get weak we can turn to the others, counting on fellow addicts to shoot holes in our "logic of justification" ("...But I NEED this for my art club...etc.") and talk us off the edge! Lol

Kudos to the both of you for daring to discuss this touchy subject! I have only been painting about 10 yrs but sewing for almost 60. I have a no buy on fabric but not yet on paint supplies. However, I stick to Daniel smith and Da Vinci watercolors and have vowed to use whichever brand of the color I have until I buy another tube. I enjoy art hauls a little, only to see which products of mediums I don’t know about. Please keep reviewing! I bought your colored pencil class and love it. Please explain the difference in pastels, wax pastels, pencils, etc., this is so confusing to me! I also like your thriftiness! I love learning tips on organizing and setting up pallettes using found objects from home or thrift shops. Love your channel.thanks
