The fridge trick DOES work. We've done it. The reason it works is almost
all refrigerators are designed to run no lower than 33 degrees, and no
higher than 40 degrees. At above 40, potatoes can start germinating.
Last year we refrigerated 1 variety. This last year they were the ones we
had our best harvest from! The one thing we did notice was once taken
out of the fridge, they did take a bit longer than usual to chit.
We have a dorm room size fridge we keep them in. Only thing in it is
potatoes we harvested this year, to plant next year.
I also have an indoor/outdoor temp sensor in there. I can glance at the
monitor at any time to make sure the temp is right. It's 37 and dark in there
as we speak. 😉
Oh, and the store russets we planted did great also. Our best year ever.

That is good storage info! I have always kept back some potatos for seed, but while I stored them in paper bags I was keeping them in a cool room instead of the refrigerator. And, I would lose 1/4 of them over the winter but it gave me free seed potatos for planting and that is always a good thing.

You’ve convinced me Jim, I’ve kept erring on the side of caution and buying in my seed potatoes, however as you have just said money is tighter this year so I’m going to start saving potatoes and giving it a go.
