Childproof Outlet - Tamper Resistant Outlet

Показать описание
Tamper resistant receptacles are now required for all new homes. If you have kids in the house and you are changing outlets, it makes sense to change to the new tamper resistant outlets.

Turn off the power to any circuit you are working on. Remove the old outlet and make sure you can identify what wires go to the gold colored screws. Mark these wires with tape if needed.

If you are working on a 15 amp circuit, replace the outlet with a 15 amp outlet. If you are in a kitchen or an area that has a 20 amp circuit, you would replace that outlet with a 20 amp outlet.

Connect your hot wires to the gold colored screws and the neutral wires to the silver screws. If you have a ground wire, connect it to the green screw.

Hi,
If you have metal boxes and metal conduit all connected to the service panel, you can add a ground wire and screw it to the metal box for personal protection. You can also replace the outlet with a GFCI and it will shut off before most people receive a shock. You would have to mark the GFI " no equipment ground."

Hi,
In the Chicago area, if you have metal boxes and metal conduit that is grounded to the service panel, you don't need a ground wire. If you have plastic boxes and nonmetallic cable, you would need a ground. I would check your local code. I've found village inspectors to be very helpful.

Hi,
There are 3 cables coming into this box.

It is my understanding that the device MUST be grounded to the box so that if someone were to unscrew the live receptacle and remove it from the box, it would still be grounded.

To be clear, if the receptacle is removed from the metal box (with metal conduit grounded to the load center) and the power is on . . . at that point - the receptacle is not grounded (just the box) and not required to be in your area?

I would use a 30 year old outlet any day of the week over these new tamper resistant ones! They are so resistant no one can plug anything in! I'm sorry but... Hate them!
