Coil Pot Construction Techniques

This is a demonstration of a variety of techniques used in coil making to create our themed pieces for the coil pot project. This is geared specifically for my beginner classes, and may not apply to many people. In this video I use Standard 103 Earthenware without grog.

I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

It’s been 7 years since you’ve posted this video, and today I watched it. I now have a better idea on how to do my project for ceramics one and thank you for making a wonderful video to assist everyone!

I am currently taking a beginning ceramics class at a local community college.  I learned far more from this 30-minute video than I did in the first 4 hours of class.  Thanks so very, very much!!

Great instructions on how to roll coils properly - I've always had trouble with that, and I'm going to try the tips you gave right away. Thanks so much!

Wonderful video, I am getting ready to start teaching 4th graders, pottery, and I have not touched clay in 20+ years. Nice refresher with a large variety of new ideas. I look forward to watching all your videos.

Ah, that's what I was forgetting to do...twist both ends. I kept getting that flat part. Thanks again for another spectacular video

Thank you for the tip about twisting! No other video had shown me that and I was wondering why it kept happening.

Thank you. Love your videos and have recommended them to people I know just starting out in ceramics. All these years and I have never read anywhere or seen any demo that said to twist the coil in opposite directions. Not even in my university ceramics course for my BFA and not even recently in university courses I took so I could have access to very large electric kilns and a gas kiln. I feel like I should contact all my former high school ceramic students and tell them. I feel like I short changed them.
