Oregon is among the states in the West dealing with a surge in COVID cases, fueled by the Delta variant. “CBS This Morning” was invited inside a Medford ICU for a first-hand look at how medical staff is coping with the crisis. Janet Shamlian reports.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

I can’t help but feel just numb towards the whole situation. These doctors and nurses, the medical staff, they deserve better, they deserve better than this stupidity.

The scene of people protesting out the hospital while people are dying… it’s making me lose faith in humanity

People need to respect and appreciate these doctors, nurses, and other health care workers because I can't even begin to fathom or comprehend the magnitude and depth of what they see day in and day out.

The PTSD these healthcare workers will and are enduring is not necessary. It’s not right.

That ending where she said patients waiting heart surgery are put on hold for covid patients... Made me cry a lot. My grandmother had open heart surgery in December 2019. Just before this mess. We were really lucky, But the idea of losing her because there be no room makes me so sad. I can't imagine what those families are going through...

Doctors need to continue surgeries and start being selective on who to treat. It’s not fair to people that need life saving surgeries who have been vaccinated or isolating to protect themselves from Covid and being responsible. It’s time they start being selective and refuse to treat unvaccinated people. Redirect them to other hospitals. In a pandemic like this, they should be able to make those decisions.

Don’t treat the MFs protesting outside. It’s time to prioritize people who did what they could to help protect themselves and others.

What will it take for people to realize the gravity of our situation? Not even losing loved ones to a slow, painful, PREVENTABLE death seems to phase them. I get it, we all have coping mechanisms...but pretending that reality doesn't exist, spreading medical misinformation, and putting other people's lives at risk is where we draw the line!

It's true. In our ICU right now, people don't leave alive. And the rooms are quickly filled again by more patients who die.

What is sad and frustrating is the a lot of the people protesting outside the hospital will end up (if they can get a bed) in that same hospital fighting for their life. Feels like we are living in the end times.

My friend is a nurse out there in Medford. I've finally been able to talk with her because she has been working non stop! People please seriously stay home or get vaccinated!! These poor medical professionals are getting beat down.

If it weren't for covid, I'd give these nurses a hug. They are really the heroes and go underappreciated. Edit: If you're a nurse and somehow read this, know you are loved ❤

I am surprised they are so generous to allow a family an hour to grieve at bedside in a full ICU during a pandemic. I am sorry to sound like I have no compassion cuz I do, but you can’t delay someone else’s life saving treatment for the luxury of mourning the dead in a situation as grave as this, especially when major disinfection is required between patients.
So sorry for the nurses and their support staff.
They are true heroes.
Increase their base pay to be commensurate with their worth.

As a nurse this is absolutely frustrating and heartbreaking.

Critical thinking skills have been lost in the fray of everything that is happening right now.

This is crazy and disheartening for the Medical Community

If you don't trust science/medicine about covid, why would you trust science/medicine to help you when you get ill with covid? That is the part I can't understand. If you think one way, stick to your beliefs. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I no longer have sympathy for these unvaxed people dying. I just think, it is what they chose.
