Ah the ethical query: fanfic or deepfake?

I find myself with a familiar type question: is Van Gogh pleased or bothered that people make a decent living selling socks printed with masterpieces he was not given riches for during his brief candle's brilliant life? What say you? Pleased or bothered?

For works like these, artistry strongly impersonating someone to the point of (for some) indistinguishable difference, I say: good show, but also notice the line you walk and recognize that Consent Matters.

It seems to me it would be most ethical to make explicit acknowledgement that this is not original to the artist himself, but obviously Alan-Watts-inspired Art.

Fanfic can be a brilliant & generative & vast landscape of resonance & integration. But it can sometimes cross lines. Methinks it worthy to sense into and respect the difference.
