ReCycle – The Classic Sample Workflow Still Works!

When it was released in 1994, ReCycle completely revolutionized the process of flipping and chopping samples for both bedroom producers and chart-topping artists. What was once a slow, tedious, and uncreative process became instantaneous, visual and playful. From its release, ReCycle became the go-to for producing grassroots electronic genres of the 90’s. The technology hasn't changed since 1994 but neither has ReCycle's ability to inspire beat makers the world over.

And now, ReCycle is completely free! In this video, Ryan will give you a deep dive into the process of creative Rex loops with ReCycle and also how you go about using those in Reason with creative beat making techniques.

Recycle changed my life.

Here’s a super useful hack for sampling vintage synths:

1. Create a great patch on your vintage synth of choice.
2. Press record in your DAW and play each note, one at a time, from the lowest to the highest key on your keyboard.
3. Bounce the recording and load it into ReCycle.
4. Chop the file so that each note has its own slice, starting cleanly at the transient.
5. Export the slices as a ReCycle patch, making sure to set the lowest note to match the first note you played.
6. Import the patch into the sampler of your choice.

Et voilà—a fully mapped, velocity-consistent, pitch-accurate instrument, ready to play.

I can still remember buying ReCycle 2 alongside Reason 2 back in August 2002. It was so exciting to use alongside other sample manglers of the time, even though it had been out for 8 years by that point. TBH, I haven’t used it in ages, but I can certainly see myself using it again now. Can’t wait to get back on it!

At first I thought it was April’s fool but guys…you listened. I’ve been asking for years to reintegrate Recycle in the Reason workflow and you did…for free!!!! I’m so stoked! It brings me back to 2001 and to this day, I think Recycle and Dr octo Rex is still the best way to chop samples and integrate them in your production. That totally made my day! You guys rock!

I love Rex format, always use it in both Reason and non-Reason DAW's! But Dr. Rex device is the most simple and powerful device to play these slices. I love that you can even change the audio output for every slice, something that no other Rex devices of other DAWs have.
