Rhaegar and Elia did not have two sons. They had a daughter named Rhaenys and a son named Aegon. Didn't you ever bother to read the books.

Do you think Ragar told Robert about him marrying Lyanna during the battle of the Trident and that’s when Robert flipped and smashed him with his hammer?

I think one of two things happened: 1. Lyanna told Robert that she loved Rhagar, and that she wouldnt marry Robert. He refused to accept it and lied to everyone that she was kidnapped instead starting the rebellion.

2. They (Rhagar and Lyanna) trusted the wrong person to tell people the truth (they eloped). Im think maybe Baelish had a hand in this. Maybe he intervened, intercepted the message and then had the rumor that she was kidnapped spread like wild fire. Since Rhagar and Lyanna were away in honeymoon phase they werent there to tell everyone the truth until it was too late.
