Despite split, Carlos Yulo grateful for former Japanese coach

Filipino gymnastics star Carlos Yulo says he is indebted to his former Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya even after they parted ways after a decade-long partnership that saw him become a world champion.

I've read a documentary story on YT about Carlos Yulo and his training in Japan with coach Munehiro Kugimiya. His coach instilled in him the discipline, confidence, and hard work. The Phil. gov't should also thank and reward this coach who acts as Carlos 2nd father.

The Sports Council of the Phil. should honor the coach Munehiro Kugimiya for his undying sacrifice, patience and motivation to keep Caloy focused and determined to succeed in preparation to any upcoming competitions. Training a stranger with limited communication is not a joke.

I think the biggest winner in this Olympic is Philippine gymnastic association as they don’t have to share this huge victory with former Japanese coach. Kudos for Kugimiya san. I hope Carlos will grow up and understand who brought him to today.

Without Coach Kugiyima I can say without any trace of doubt, and with the strongest conviction that there would be no Carlos Yulo, the Olympic gold medalist and the pride of the Philippines. I hope that Coach Kugiyima one way or another has also received even just half of the financial rewards Carlos got as Coach Kugiyima has shared ten years of his life in making Carlos Yulo.

Kugimiya guided Yulo to the gymnast that he is. That coach gave him precise form and execution, as well as difficulty. Yulo has wonderful gymnastics fundamentals to build new skills upon- the coach is truly responsible for this.
