Doesn't compromise on key. Still. There was a review (poss. NY Times?) that compared the broadway Fantine with LuPone's award-winning creation of the role in London with the RSC. "Ms. Graff is excellent in the role but when Ms. LuPone sang the role in London, it became an ARIA" You can here that here
