Way Out West by Sonny Rollins from Way Out West

Among Sonny Rollins' many albums recorded during the '50s, Prestige's Moving Out and Saxophone Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins's first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now."

What a wonderful recording. I only got to see Sony one time, that was awesome. Sonny is now 92 and I hope he is enjoying his retirement. Thanks Sonny.

So little flashiness and useless technical demonstrations here, and so much subtlety, delicacy, and major musicianship from all the Masters Musicians involved. Sonny! Rollins Shelly Manne! Ray Brown! FOREVER!

I never understood why this theme never became a jazz standard, it's a masterpiece. I'm not aware of any recording of this composition by any jazzman which is pretty insane to me.
