Nat King Cole live in HD with the Cliff Adams Singers from the 1963 BBC special "An Evening With Nat King Cole".
LYRICS:
If I had to choose just one day
To live my whole life through
It would surely be the day that I met you

Newborn whippoorwills were calling from the hills
Summer was a-coming in but fast
Lots of daffodils were showing off their skills
Laughing all together, I could almost hear them whisper
"Go on, kiss her, go on and kiss her"

If I had to choose one moment
To live within my heart
It would be surely be that moment
Recalling how we started
Darling, it would be when you smiled at me
That way, that Sunday, that summer

(Newborn whippoorwills were calling from the hills)
(Summer was a-comin' in but fast)
(Lots of daffodils were showin' off their skills)
(Nodding all together, I could almost hear them whisper)
("Go on, kiss her, go on and kiss her")

If I had to choose one moment
To live within my heart
It would be that tender moment
Recalling how we started
Darling, it would be when you smiled at me
That way, that Sunday, that summer

Johnny Mathis once said, "The thing about Nat is, he waits, and then he sings. Then he waits, and then he sings." Couldn't put it better.

There was literally a day like this in the summer of 1980. It was a Sunday. We had just gone to a concert with the Houston symphony at Jones Hall. The performance was Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. I was searching for the words and gestures to tell her good bye as we stood on her mother's porch steps. With each step backward I took, she stepped forward, as if she wanted to linger. The look on her face appeared expectant. A hug and a kiss seemed appropriate. I had known her for over a year and we had had so many conversations and done so many things together, I was falling in love with her, but I had not touched her. She had smiled and waved at me at church. We had several dates after that. We played tennis. She was musically talented. I enjoyed everything about her. Yet, there she was standing inches from me, accepting every compliment I gave her and looking at me as if she were waiting for a hug and a kiss. I wanted to kiss her and start planning a life with her but I didn't. We remained friends but time, distance, and other priorities intervened and we drifted apart. I've never forgotten that moment. This song reminds me of her.

The most prejudiced person I knew....mother. She was a Greek and had her hatred of anything otherwise....She saw Nat at the CA state fair in 1955. I was a 6 yr. old....she said this: "He can put his shoes under my bed anytime...." To this very day...Forgiveness even visits the Bastards...such as me.

One of Nat King Cole's final hits, and a beautiful one at that. He expresses the feeling of the song so effortlessly. This is all live from his BBC special, "An Evening With Nat King Cole".

I grew up in an orphanage in the 50's - 60's. Music was shunned as was the outside world. When I fortunately got back with my father in 1964, I recall hearing The Christmas Song - I couldn't stop crying listening to this incredible song and finally being home with my dad. I was hooked on Cole as was my dad.

Nat Cole had such talent and class, not only as a vocalist but as a jazz pianist. We are lucky to have these recordings.

This is so beautiful, it made me cry. Yes, chillun', this is what television used to be like: real talent, live music.

This gentleman passed away when I was in my early teens. He is still my favorite male singer of all times. He touches a chord within me. He can still make me weep.
