The Centuries-Old Cave Churches of Turkey

Hidden in the rock structures of the ancient Turkish region of Cappadocia, some of the world’s oldest Christian churches are carved in stone. The Göreme Open Air Museum is a cluster of chapels, monasteries and churches that date back to the 4th century. These unique stone structures, formed from a 2.6 million-year-old volcanic eruption, house 10 separate churches that make up the museum. Inside each church, Byzantine-era frescoes adorn the walls. Thanks to its extensive history and unique geology, the Göreme Open Air Museum became one of Turkey’s first two places to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don’t listen to the narrator, saying about that in the 4th century, all these were built. The reality is that kapadokia was for many centuries the border between Christianity ( greek eastern Roman Empire- byzanium) and islam. All these churches- monasteries- towns, eventually to be destroyed, by Turks. The last Greek descendants, of the original Greek people who constructed all the underground or above ground, monuments in kapadokia were forced to move to Greece, 100 years ago by Turks, leaving their millennia homeland.

That Church had no Icon in the Christian era. When the byzantine and ottoman empire conquered turkey there Orthodox people began to place icons on the former Christian Church ... Christians in the First Century Have No Icon
