In American History X, the movie's director Tony Kaye had a difficult time with the constant changes made to the script by actors Edward Furlong and Edward Norton. These changes caused Kaye to feel disappointed with the project and even consider quitting. According to Kaye, the script was changed so much by the actors that it deviated from his own original vision, which left him unsatisfied. Furthermore, Norton's performance didn't meet Kaye's expectations, leading the director to still believe that the movie was left unfinished to this day. #shorts #americanhistoryx #didyouknow #moviefacts #moviedetails #edwardnorton

Norton's performance wasn't satisfying? It's his best, most powerful role to date! And feeling the movie was unfinished? It's amazing start to finish, there hasn't been many more movies like it

Edward Norton: "HOW ABOUT I CURB STOMP HIM"
Kaye: "it says 'and he runs away' "

He later admitted Norton was right with the changes.

Sounds like Norton saved the movie from bad direction

That's not the full story though since Kaye later saw the movie and apologized to Edward Norton, stating that it was in fact a great movie.

For anyone wondering. The original script said that after his younger brother gets killed the movie supposed to go back to black and white and Norton was going to regress back into his old ways but Norton refused to let it end that way

Norton was nominated for an Oscar and Kaye wasn't satisfied?

American History X is a Masterpiece and Norton should have won an Oscar for that performance. Literally his best performance to date.

The movie turned out perfect, so it was for the best. It is a known fact that Norton is controlling as hell and can be a nightmare to work with, but he is also brilliant.

This film is excellent. When I saw it in the theater, the woman behind me burst into tears at the end and she didn’t stop bawling even in the parking lot. It is a powerful, powerful film.

Ah yes, the inimitable Edward "Furling."

Norton is know for being difficult in that way. Often insisting on changes to the script. It’s probably why, despite being a sensational actor, he never became the mega superstar that his talent would have otherwise dictated. Not saying he was wrong about the changes, just that’s his reputation.

Edward Norton was actually fired from the avengers for doing the same thing and Disney wasn’t having it. Imo they should have kept Edward Norton around to supervise all the Marvel scripts in hindsight to the garbage Disney makes.

Just so people know Kayes edit was only like 95 minutes, the Norton cut (the one we all saw) was 120 minutes. American History X is definitely a film that benefits from a longer run time to I think the right choice was made.

He wasn't happy with Norton's performance? He became a different human being...it was a masterpiece. Norton and Furling were perfect in their parts. I still cannot watch it without a visceral response.
