General comment from New Jersey USA. I’m retired and have a lot of time to watch YouTube golf instruction. A mean a whole lot, much of it from UK instructors. Many very good. I don’t comment nearly at all but am breaking silence to say I think you are the best I’ve seen. I’m a 25 hcp but am on the
ascendency 👍

That slight pause at the top has made all the difference in the world for a guy who used to rush his downswing & often early extend. Those light thumbs are also good for chipping too.

The push back and light thumbs resonated with me. Re-training decades of bad habits is hard to do but these two swing thoughts have me going in the right direction. Thanks!

Two thumbs up for the thumb drill, Giles! I feel a slightly different (& better) club path when using this drill - can feel the club dropping nicely into the slot. My normal ball flight trajectory is a lower line drive, and this drill gives me a higher ball flight. I also find that pausing at the top ensures time to shift toward the target, and get pressure into the lead side foot before starting the downswing.
I will definitely use light thumbs thought on the course tomorrow; thanks to your student who recommended this.
And thank you for another excellent video!

Another amazing video. Giles I've always noticed form watching your vids at the top of your swing it's almost like your club kind of hangs there for a second before starting your downswing. Now after watching this it seems like it's the slight pause at the top feel that causes that. You make it look effortless!

I start still and careful so I get stiff. Then I try to hit it from the top... Thanks for this video.

Thanks for the review! Swing anomalies happen because golfers are not sure that what they are doing is correct!

Great stuff. tempo is SO super important for your golf swing. One thing that has also helped me is paying attention to gravity... like doing a backswing and just feeling the club drop back down at the speed of gravity. Letting gravity dictate the speed of the downswing at first and then gently accelerating from there seems to work nicely for me.

I like to walk and move quickly when going somewhere (like you and Rory). Both a 1-2-3 swing tempo (like Ernie Els and Fred Couples) and a 1-2 tempo (like Nick Price, or Rory with his early transition) have worked for me. I think when my arms and chest are more synchronized in their pace and stopping position for top of swing is when I get better shots. Conversely, if my arms abduct across my chest and arm swing gets long (making upper body be ahead of arms coming down, arms never being capable of catching up the swing is more of a struggle, feels like it takes more effort, and produces slower speeds. It gives the illusion of a slower tempo overall, but is really more of an out of sequence making the swing take longer).

The two perfections in golf - rhythm and tempo!
Well handled😊

I never realized I was firing with my chest too early. This video is really helpful for me.

Thanks for this video, Giles. I'm getting back into golf after 5-year layoff. I couldn't play due to lower back issues. I've lost considerable distance since trying to play again, which is causing me to swing too hard and rush the downswing. I can't get it through to my brain to swing smooth. I will try the drills you recommend and hopefully start eliminating the fat and thin shots I've been experiencing lately. When I do swing smooth, I generally make solid contact. Thanks again!!

I switched to a 2 hand grip instead of interlocking many years ago. I felt there was more flexibility for me to hinge. I also took my trailing hand thumb off the grip to grip a bit more like a baseball bat with my bottom(trailing) hand. That also gave more flexibility but more importantly it took away the tendency to cast the club and helped to allow centrifugal force to be the speed generator in my swing.
I don’t swing any faster but I definitely don’t have to work so hard for the speed either

“Light thumbs” works for me.
When I’m warming up in the nets, I will even ‘grip’ (if that’s the right word) the club in the gap between forefinger and the next finger of my right (trail) hand. That really does make it impossible to grip it tight and allows a really free, relaxed swing.

Excellent video Giles on how to create TEMPO and RHYTHM in one's golf swing. Of your suggestions, I like the "push back" and the "light thumbs" drill the best. Always learning and validating from you Giles! Keep up the good work!

The pause at the top is critical to prevent rushing the downswing and allowing you to let your weight shift on to the left or lead leg. It allows the momentum of the heavy chunk of metal (the club head) going back to come to a stop and change to momentum in the opposite direction in the downswing. If you want the use names to help set this rhythm, two good ones are Vijay Singh (stretch out the first name as in Vee Jaaaay and make the last one short and a bit explosive) and Ernie Els.

I hit with my right thumb off, like palming it over the joint in my thumb. Seems like it helps me make better contact, think my right hand is to dominating

I find that if I hit casual like I’m doing a pitch shot then the way the ball behaves because of my easy relaxed swing is so much better
