In this video I show you how to play the bass line from Suzi Quatro's version of 'The Boss' which was originally recorded by James Brown. This is from Suzi's 'Uncovered' album which was released in 2022.

The bass line is seriously funky, especially in the middle section. Each section has a bass groove over one chord in true James Brown style but the bass line is fairly technical to play. You can download the note-for-note bass line transcription PDF in standard notation and Tab using the link at the top of this description.

Hi Greg...wow a double helping of Suzi Q and a personal message to you from the Q!! I think you should get her on zoom for a bass chat.
What a lesson!! Hats off to you Greg, awesome would be an understatement. I have the original by the Father of Funk Jamessss Brownnnn, don’t tell anyone but I like Suzi Q’s better😁
Ive spent a great evening playing through it and enjoyed it much.
Thanks again Greg
Keep Groovin.

Thanks for another fun lesson Greg. So happy Suzi contacted you. I’ve bought her version of this song on iTunes and will listen to it a lot. I was talking to another female bass player and told her about your series. She said Suzi Quatro is the reason she learned bass. I’ll send her this video.

Hi Greg, many thanks for the reply, you are so right this has a real funky groove going on, it’s ace to play once you get in the pocket.
As for the James Brown “The Boss” that “muddle” section (yes I did mean muddle) is very strange. It’s definitely out of tune, and sometimes I think, either, the bass is playing a string down and out of tune, or, all four strings are present and all are out of tune. Still, it is James Brown and anything goes😂 Keep Groovin’ Bryn

Loved the lesson Greg, I am ashamed to say that I didn't know many Suzi Quatro songs but will look them up now! You have a great teaching style, full of great tips and a sense of humour! Just a thought for your continuing study of female bass players, perhaps Tina Weymouth would be an excellent candidate.

That middle section look weirdly familiar. I went through some of my old blues stuff and I found it! It is “Laundromat Blues” by Albert King. Its funny when you look at a song and say…. I know that from somewhere!
