A cable modem termination system (CMTS) is a hardware device at the headend of a cable TV network that is used to connect cable subscribers to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). They provide high speed data services like Internet or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over the cable TV network. The CMTS may also implement some basic filtering to protect against unauthorized users and various attacks. Traffic shaping is sometimes performed to prioritize application traffic, perhaps based upon the subscribed plan or download usage, and also to provide guaranteed Quality of service (QoS) for the cable operator's own PacketCable-based VOIP service.
