My take is that the previous civilisation was able to attain heaven, or something similar to that judging by the place shown at the end. This probably encouraged them to abandoned everything on their previous settlement, causing all the bio-mechanical things to mutate overtime. The protagonist, I presume, was someone who was forgotten or a completely separate entity that wants to ascend to "heaven". Hence, he journeyed through the ruined biological civilisation in the goals of joining his fellow people. Which kinda makes the ending a tiny bit sadder, since my guy just wanted to reach his family over the other-side, if you think about it.

The way I interpreted this game is that this is set in a world where intelligent life decided to fuse organic material and machines so that all things like switches and weapons were designed to perfectly fit the user. Unfortunately a parasite eventually evolved to calcify users and thus make them unable to use said devices and render them useless. In response to this growing threat, the engineers created devices that can strip away the calcified parts of an arm so that the inhabitants have a chance to still use the devices before they fully succumb to the parasites’ control and become completely immobile. As a last solution, the engineer’s resorted to use a neural link that can upload the consciousness of the inhabitants to create a hive mind and be able to stream their consciousness to other bodies in hopes they can escape the clutches of the parasite and make it to sanctuary.

There's an odd serenity to the final scene that shines through even the grotesque imagery that I find hard to rationalize or explain. It's almost like this was what was meant to happen but we, as outside observers to this alien world, can only look at it through our understanding of what would be considered a happy or sad ending.

Half expected to see Kaldor Draigo walk up and promethean flame the MC at the end there. But man, right there at the "Goal" and you get melded to the ground as some sort of mycelian organism. I wonder if his consciousness is still intact in some sort of "I have no mouth and I must scream".

The ending of the this game reminds of the ending of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, wherein at the end of the story, the protagonist is also turned into a blob of flesh and must stay like that for all of eternity.

I don’t know if game developers, or anyone, are meant to be working on things this grotesque for such long periods of time…. Damn.. props to them though, I suppose the art was probably mostly ‘finished’ a while ago, and actually getting it to work was more like a desk job at a computer.
