I did study Dickens in college (in the 60s) and hope that he is still read in English lit. courses. I have only Pickwick Papers on my shelf of the Dickens I have read. Fun and useful fact (that you likely already know): Dorothy Sayers got her title for "Have His Carcase" from the mispronunciation of habeas corpus by a character in Pickwick Papers. It helped me in reading the wonderful Sayers story to remember that Lord Wimsey was citing the habeas corpus requirement for murder investigations using this, at that time, I presume, well-known and humorous mispronunciation of the term.

Yes I have read Our Mutual Friend which I believe was Dickens’ last book. I loved it. The BBC adaptation staring Anna Friel was much the best I have seen. It’s a shame Charles Dickens is not taught in schools ( I don’t think)… he was a genius. Thank you

Eugene Wrayburn is maybe my favorite Dickens character. Our Mutual Friend is a spectacular novel.

I wanted to invite you to do my Booktube Top Tens Tag. I’m compiling a database of our collective favorite books, and you clearly have very good taste. 🙂

Oh ... so glad you did this review. I was having a hard time whether to read this Dickens novel or Ruth by Gaskell. Since I had just finished Bleak House, which was fantabulous BTW, I decided to opt for the shorter, lighter novel of Ruth. I can't stop thinking about BH, it was really really good. I agree that I get aggravated with Dickens' "wordiness", but like you said, his books are so very good, in the end, I totally forgive that! :) Also, I think how most of his books were written in installments with a monthly readership, so I am sure it was quite appropriate in that sense. I have not read enough of Dickens to have a top five or anything yet, but I kinda think that The Christmas Carol will always be my most favorite novel of Dickens. I look forward to reading it again this Christmas. <3 I am enjoying Ruth very much & now I know for sure, after your terrific review, that Our Mutual Friend is my next read. Thanks!!

Would you recommend read this book as the first Dickens Book? I just found it interesting and I want to start reading novels and stuff like that!

Same feelings reading Our Mutual Friend. Lots of characters and sidestories. But an overreaching view discloses itself step by step.

02:50 What procedure does Silas Wegg use to conquer everything in Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend?

I love all of Dickens' books and the TV miniseries about as much. Little Dorrit with Claire Foy is my favorite TV series, and the 1951 A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim is my best loved Dickens film. David Copperfield and Oliver Twist are among the novels that I enjoy the most, although A Christmas Carol is probably my favorite story of the books. I think these stories never grow old.

After reading 130pp of OMF, I suddenly realised I had no idea what was going on, so I put it aside for 48 hours and I'll start it again!
BTW, I just finished Chuzzlewit, which is VG and funny.

I've read Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and Dombey and Son. Favourite of these 3 had got to be ATOTC!
I'm looking forward to read Our Mutual Friend and Little Dorrit which are sitting on my tbr shelf.
Thank you for your great sharing! 😀😍

Little Dorrit is his worst novel that I've read. I loved OMF and Great Expectations. His best novel has to be Bleak House, probably the best novel ever written.

In films Robert Altman is good with large ensemble casts.😂 The film Nashville the prime example. But this was the most characters I have seen in a Dickens novel. Nicholas Nickleby had a crazily high volume of characters too.
