lyrics:
About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

So l asked if I could have one when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and i soon found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched the dog fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw
The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
the devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

Had a cap n ball colt for about 3 years now. Johnny, a might slow was a bit of a fucking understatement, man

I actually heard this while I was getting my lunch at Jersey Mike's in Bozeman, Montana. I am so happy that real and great music still lives and is being heard.

Fantastic version, easily the best one i've heard and far better than the Highwaymen version - which also featured Cash - from about the same time. Why this wasn't included on Unchained is beyond me (it wasn't released until after Cash died). This was fantastic and should have been a single. I'd even be willing to swap it out for Rusty Cage, it's so good.

This song’s my Drill Sergeant’s favorite cadence to call.

Just got a txt from a friend to look this song up because he thought my revolver was mentioned, first one named, and Cash ain't kidding, even going fast it takes a good 5 minutes to load if you've got the powder already in papers.

This song always reminded me of “don’t take you’re guns to town”

This is one of Rick rubin's influence covers. The original artist can't be topped, even by Johnny. As a FAN it's hard for me to say it. But, This one will always be Steve Earle's!!!

This is a great way of saying evil kills people, not guns.

Sometimes I think Cash never found his true sound, I would agree when some say he was early punk rock more then he was country

I’ve listened to a lot of Johnny Cash, and this is the only song I can find of him on the electric guitar.

What I wouldn't give to have Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings back again

Love the song, Bob Seger put this on his new cd, but I think my favorite versions, after listening to them all are Waylon and the Highwaymen, (Waylon, Willie, Kris, and get much better than that!
