I'm in the process of trying to resurrect my old Sony CCD-TR501E which appears to have the same type B mechanism. It's been more than 20 years since I cracked open a camcorder and I always lived in fear of them. There was just so much jammed into not a lot of space. What I really wanted to see was how the plate comes out at about 18:40 so that I can see what's going on with the VCR having next to no takeup tension which means that it chews the tapes that I now want to digitise. I was expecting a dried out and hardened belt when it chewed a tape after powering up for the first time in at least 10 years. I'll keep unscrewing until I get to see the takeup mech.
I knew that there was a reason that I first stopped repairing VCRs and then stopped repairing everything. For about 20 years the only things I've repaired are things that I've built myself.
If you have any tips on what to look for with a weak takeup tension on a B mech they'd be greatly appreciated.

Well video cameras are pretty complicated to take apart, you need to know what you're doing and also, use the right tools. Also, what causes the metal piece to scratch the flexible circuit board, does it do it on normal use? And why couldn't you unbend the bent tape guide?

I used to work as an authorized Sony tech repairing Sony consumer electronics back in the day when things were still repairable. I love your video, transports me back in time. I actually have several broken 8mm camcorders in boxes waiting till I retire. Could you let me know the part number for that Sony screwdriver. I had one and lost it and would sure love to get another.

I have over 100 hours of 8mm and hi-8mm tapes I need to digitise again I did this process once but for some reason I recently played some back and the footage is terrible. Can you tell me how I can get knowledge on repairing Sony handycams especially cleaning the heads. I have about six camp courses I purchased just for this project, but most of them have poor playback quality.

What a great video. Im so surprised that there are still a lot of these handycam lovers.

I just dugged out our family's old sony CDD-TRV14E and out of amazement, it still works! It opens up its catridge all perfectly. But when i try to eject the inserted catridge, it got stuck.

Is there any way you could help me to resolve this? This is very precious to us.

YouTube recommended this old to me... The slide assembly on my Digital8 is faulty. It's like YouTube is reading my mind!

wish you could have shown how to correct this problem. I believe this is why my hi 8 player doesn't work

Is there any way to prevent that flex cable from being damaged by the catch?

So the actual tape mechanisms for loading and ejecting the tape are mostly the same across the hi8/digital8 model lines? I have a dcrtrv320 that won't load a tape. I've already taken it all apart to see if anything broke and or jammed but couldn't find an issue. Can I just get another camera for parts and swap the mechanism from it, even if the model number isn't the same?
