Ray Sawyer (February 1, 1937 – December 31, 2018) was an American singer and vocalist with the 1970s rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Though primarily a backing vocalist and occasional percussionist on congas or maracas, he sang lead on their hit song "The Cover of Rolling Stone" and was a recognizable presence in the band owing to the eyepatch and cowboy hat he wore.

Oh my gosh, I ran across this song by accident and it touched me too my soul. I have two beautiful daughters and I couldn't imagine life without them.😢😢

One of the saddest songs out there, done by one of the greatest talents in the biz. It's amazing how Dr. Hook flew so easily under the radar, and never really got the recognition they deserved. I've said it a million times, one of the most talented bands to ever grace the music scene. So happy that was blessed to grow up with them. How great were the 70's ? AJ

I wish I could tell Ray, I lost my little girl too, but she was 25, and left me a mini me of herself. I love this band so very much and I'm so sorry 😢

R.I.P. Ray, you and the band were among the best of the groups of the 70's.. severely underrated.

Should have been a number one hit.
Instead it only reached number 81.
I never heard this song before.
Simply fantastic.

He sang his heart out for every one, I enjoyed it way back when and right to this day. Just to hear him sing still gives me chills. Now he is singing for the people in heaven, rest in peace dear soul.

I never knew that Dr Hook and the medicine show has so many food songs. I was only familiar with "Cover of the Rolling stones" and Sylvia's Mother." This song here was a beautiful, but sad song.
