This week I received a few more rubber tiles to complete my floor and I addressed a question about through mortises by choppping...well...a through mortise. But this mortise is a bit wider than the chisel I have so its tiny bit more complex.

Thank you, that was a very clear demo of the wedging action of the chisel

I heard you mention the ramtang thingamadoober on Wood Talk.  I couldn't for the life of me get a visual of what this thing would look like but I see it now.  :)  I can also attempt through mortises with a bit more confidence.  Thanks for the demo.  You make it look easy!

I've done or tried several through mortises on a few mallets I've made for my shop and it is one of the most difficult thing to make, for me anyway. It takes a tremendous amount of patience and also proper layout and very sharp chisels.

Shannon, would you ever use a hand drill (manual one) to do the initial through cuts and clean up with a chisel for this kind of joint?
