JAZZ SLANG P.2: Double Time Feel EXPLAINED

In this example, we play 1-chorus in regular time and then 1-chorus of double time FEEL. There is a difference between Double Time vs. Double Time FEEL

Double Time is where everything is played twice as fast (time feel & chords). So a chorus that would last 30 seconds would now be 15 seconds.

Double Time Feel is where the time feel is twice as fast but the chords move at the same duration as the original speed. So a chorus that would last 30 seconds would still last 30 seconds.

Listen to the bass to hear the quarter note bpm double from 108 to 216. But even though the time feel is twice as fast, the chords move at the same duration. How? Because we play the chords twice as long over the new double time tempo (16 bars at 108bpm = 32 bars at 216bpm)

Bijan Taghavi (piano),
Rodney Whitaker (bass),
Michael J. Reed (drums)

Not my favorite style of jazz but I respect it because it came before any other
