Small Living Room Makeover - Faux Built-Ins Using Ikea Liatorp Cabinets

Small living room makeover! I am sharing how to achieve a faux "built-in" look for your fireplace alcoves by using the Ikea Liatorp bookcases. I hacked the Ikea Liatorp bookcase with glass doors into a mini entertainment unit for my living room. If you are like me, and you have alcoves either side of your fireplace and wondered "What can I do with the alcoves in my living room?" then this post is for you.

Late last year, I got quotes for custom built-ins for my living room. Custom woodwork is a skill, and it is worth the money. However, the quotes I received were out of my budget. So, I did some Ikea hack research and scrolled online to get ideas for my living room alcoves. I saw lots of Billy bookcase hacks, but I decided on the Ikea Liatorp bookcases with glass doors for my project. These have more of a cottage feel, and they have moulding detail on the top and bottom of the cabinets. I choose the Liatorp bookcases with the glass doors are I wanted to add storage to the bottom of the bookcase.

Seeing Lily arranging your china (she was actually doing a pretty good job, very careful) reminded me of my Aunty's china cabinets she would let me 'play with' as a kid. I could spend hours arranging and re-arranging her treasures and now I have my own cabinets and to this day I can spend hours playing china cabinets - I find it very relaxing. I can see you instilling a life long love for your niece.

Our kids don't own their own homes yet. I introduced them to your videos to encourage them they don't have to start out with a mini mcmansion and can live luxuriously fabulously well. I'm the same with cables, I cannot stand to have them on view as they're so ugly and no matter how neat and tidy a room is, if there are cables on show, it looks a mess. Those cabinets are lovely and your whole lounge turned out so well. Loving the real fire too. 😊

Looks fresh and tidy. I actually like the cabinets as freestanding pieces rather than built ins because it gives you options for rearranging and moving them about. You are lucky to have your Mom with you and I'm sure she's so happy to spend time with you.
