One reason women tried going back to the tribes after they were "rescued" was how poorly they were treated when they returned to civilization

I’m Native American and Scottish, I was raised on my reservation and I was taught that the white women and girls were pretty much taken care of extremely well, of course it all depended on the tribe as to how they were treated. I’m Kumeyaay from Southern California, our dealings were with the Spaniards they were ruthless.

There were hundreds of different First Nations in North America and they had vastly different traditions and cultures and governments.

Some women were treated well but most were the victims of extreme cruelty. In regard to Olive Oatman, upon returning to white society, she married a wealthy banker, adopted a daughter and lived a contented life.

They raped them. Also, their women were property. Not in every tribe, but yes.

"Women were treated with the respect they deserved"? Not true. As a woman, you had a 50/50 shot if you were captive just surviving the trip back to the tribe. If the raiders thought you were slowing them down, they smashed your head in. If you had a baby, they'd beat it like a rug against a tree. If they thought they had too many captives to care for, they take turns on half the woman, then scalp them. They other half got to live like slaves until some warrior thought they would make a worthy wife.

I don't know where you got your facts from, but even the natives would tell you what I just did. The most dangerous time for a raiding party was on the trip back home. They knew they were being pursued by either the army or militia. They were more than willing to return with some of their spoils, than none. So they'd kill off anyone who got in the way of that

I am Lakota from the pine ridge, Indian reservation, any captains were assimilated into at five, and seen as one of the people, got a love how you were generalizing every tribe with the exception of a couple of examples, and I would just like to point out, when Kanna's wife tried to return to him, they did not permit her to, and she died of depression as a result, and she's not the only one who ended up in such a situation, But there again, I have to love your attempt to give a history that you clearly know nothing about.

It always saddens me to hear about Olive having to leave behind her two children when she was returned to civilization and her own people.
No wonder she didn't smile again.

Has anyone ever heard the story of Mary Jemison who was captured by the Shawnee in the mid-1700s? They killed her mother, sibling, and father in front of her by scalping them in compensation for a tribe member who was killed. It is interesting story.

This is absolute nonsense, for Comanche were savages, not just to whites but long before they fought the whites they were brutal to other Indians. It all depended on the tribe.

"Man's inhumanity to man, " is a common thread throughout history. The script is the same it has not changed, but the times and places are different. If you want a modern day scenario of this, look at how some of the Russian soldiers are treating Ukranian women.

This depiction has been completely cherry picked. There is a reason they were called savages. Commanches in particular were extremely brutal to their captives, often branding them and torturing them to death. This is cold hard facts from letters and writings of the people who lived through it and saw it first hand. Yes there some examples of captives being absorbed into tribes but there are many more who experienced the wrath.

And using B rated movie clips here is disgusting and slaps disrespect into the face of Indians/ Native Americans.

The fact is that those who were mistreated rarely survived to write pleasant stories. Look up the story of the German sisters to find out how captive women were normally treated.

One reason captives may want to go back is a disorder called “Stockhome syndrome” (I probably spelled the first word wrong apologizes) which is a mental defense again the trauma of being held captive. It causes the person to fall in a sick sort of love with their captives. Another reason is that most of the captives that wanted to go back is because they where treated very well.

The Indians were not as "mannered" towards woman and captives as this "rose" lens look at history portrays. Read some real books and learn some real facts

it depended on the tribe. there was one case where they kidnapped women and sold them as slaves.

Do a story on Native American women who were taken captive.

I'm fascinated by Native American culture and would have loved to go and lived amongst the natives. Not all tribes but definitely amongst the Lakota or Cheyenne.

Another white female that goes with this is Francis Slocum, kidnapped in 1754 by the Delaware and sold to the Miami where she lived out her life as the wife of the chief. This video paints a picture that's a little too rosy, IMHO. Kidnapping and long captivity leads to Stockholm syndrome. Also, not every woman who experienced an Indian raid come out of it in one piece. Some were tortured and killed. It was fairly common to kill a pregnant woman in a gruesome fashion.
