Fran Bow tells the story of a young girl who loses her family one night to a terrible tragedy. Some time later she finds herself in the care of a mental asylum, seperarted from her only friend - a black cat called Mr. Midnight, and her last remaining family - Aunt Grace. One night she decides to esape the asylum, find her cat and solve the crime behind her family tragedy. This is part 1 of a playthrough for Fran Bow, covering chapter 1 of the game.

When she took those pills and you said “it’s like she’s a guinea pig” and that’s so true about psychological medications. Even if it’s been tested time and time again, it has different affects on different people. It sucks how experimental mental medications can be.

Little bit of symbolism I picked up on: the shadow monsters you see surrounding the kids in the asylum in the “medicine dimension” are the physical embodiments of their trauma/mental illness. i.e the girl at 33:26 was molested and therefore has a shadow wrapped around her and bloody handprints around her private areas, symbolizing her trauma from that horrific event.

It's been so long since I've seen this game. It's so well made and written that it never fails to surprise me even when I know what happens. Fran herself is such a great character, very like an actual child XD

I like how every other sentence is something along the lines of "oh wow, this game is disturbing". Personally, I think Fran Bow is one of the best point and click horror games out there. The story is phenomenal and very detailed and deep. I don't know if you've seen some interviews with the creators, but this was a very personal project for one of the creators. Apparently, she drew inspiration from things she went through in real life. It doesn't go into details, I understand why she would want to keep it private. But I think it's really interesting to think about. She described the process of making the game as therapeutic.
There's so many different ways to interpret the story, and I think that's another reason it's so loved among its community.
