Lake Çildir #kars #turkey

As Lake Çildir was about a 60 minute drive from Kars I needed to find away to get there and back. Fortunately with a google search I located a local man who was able to take me in his VW Caravelle. At an altitude of 1959m above sea level and covering 123 sq km, Lake Cildir is the second largest lake in East Anatolia after Lake Van. It begins to freeze in mid-December and begins to thaw from mid-April. As a general rule, it is possible to walk on the lake starting from January. Doing so was a weird feeling. Clearly, it’s be safe as they allow horse drawn sleds and snowmobile on it, not to mention there’s a large stove to brew tea on also sitting on the ice.
