Dec 2015 Detroit Diesel 4-53T Cold Start

First decent cold weather since finishing the Dodge calls for a cold start to see how it does. Air temp is about 34F when this was shot, with previous nights temps down in the 20s. Truck had been sitting unused for at least a week. Without Ether, it did surprisingly well.

Having just enjoyed reading while in hospital the unbelievable story of the creation of this beauty (anyone here who hasn't "read the book" should seek it out), I finally got home and had a chance to hear the start-up. My life is now complete. What an absolute joy this truck is. I want a ride.

Beautiful truck! You could always put an inline block heater on the lower radiator hose. Kats block heaters more than likely has one that would fit.

Beautiful ol Dodge, some diehards must be upset to see a GM engine in a Dodge though, but those Detroit's are just simple great engines.

Ever heard of a British truck company called Foden? From the late 50's till early 70's they made a 4.8l 2 stroke 6 cyl engine called the FD6 and was used in buses and trucks. Very powerful back then as it produced 175bhp.

Started pretty well for a Detroit. They don’t like cold starts.

Great truck!!! Did you know Dodge made their own diesel engine back in the late 1930's? It was supposed to be based on their flathead platform but came out as an OHV and it was smokeless back then! I don't think sales were high enough as Dodge used the flathead 6 gas engines for a long time. One version had 331c.i. with dual carbs! The V-8 'RedRam' came into use also.
