Tokyo also has one other major edge over NYC - a seemingly endless supply of high-quality, affordable, well-kept clothing items in their thrift stores

i would mostly give the advantage to tokyo because i feel like newyork street style tends be more similar between people. there’s exceptions obv but i think of japanese street style and it’s so insanely diverse that i don’t really think the two are that comparable.

I lived in Japan for 6 years. Visited Tokyo many times. He’s right. Hands down, the general population, to include older people, have superb style. They have outstanding fashion sense.

I’ve been to NYC and Japan within the last year and I was absolutely blown away by the style of literally everyone it Tokyo. It’s next level class. It gave me so much inspiration and made me realize I need to step out of my comfort zone clothing wise

To be fair Japanese fashion is a lot more affordable for its high fashion and the barrier for entry for fashion in general is a lot less pricier compared to American and a lot of the west

That explanation sounds well thought out. And probably a correct assessment

i went to japan for the first time and man….. do they have STYLE!!!! it’s like a fashion show everywhere you go. even in the non-fashion cities like harajuku, ginza, tokyo, shibuya, and akhibara, to name a few, everyone has fashion. i really love the street style in japan. to add, all of the stores have a lot of variety with their clothes so there’s always something for everyone! 🥹😮‍💨🫶🏻

In NY there’s blurred lines between looking stylish and looking homeless

That guy with the wooden shoes looks badass. I’d use him as a character in a fighting game.

I went to japan last April and I just embraced how they wear. Priority is the comfort and love the simplicity of the design..

In my limited experience in Tokyo, the street fashion is fantastic and interesting. The one thing that stands out though is the generally, roughly consistent body shape and size amount most Japanese in Tokyo (generalization, I know!)

New York has a diversity in all sizes, shapes, hair, etc. that broadens the possibilities!

Ngl, when I studied abroad at a university in the US, I saw yoga pants and leggings every day. If you come to a Japanese university, you'll see how diverse the fashion scene is. Stastically speaking, definitely Tokyo.
